Wheels4Life

Donating bikes in Haiti.

Founded by globetrotting trials legend Hans Rey and his wife Carmen, Wheels4Life provides bicycles for people in need of transportation – for school, work or health reasons. The non-profit charity partners with local individuals and organisations in developing countries, believing that “the gift of mobility, in the form of a bicycle, can do miracles.” The philosophy of the organisation is to supply bicycles to the “poorest of the poorest”, people who need bikes as transportation to “significantly better their lives or the lives of others”.

Unlike organisations who collect bicycles and refurbish them from the likes of Europe and the US, Wheels4Life tends to buy locally, with the aim of smoothing out logistical hurdles and putting money directly into the local economy – though there are plans to send containers of purpose-built bikes from China. As a charity with an inspiring, high profile figurehead with bike industry contacts, overheads are impressively low too, with 90-95% of all donations being funneled towards buying bikes.
