The Freedom Ride Project

The Freedom Ride Project is one in a series of initiatives set up by the Mani Deshi Foundation, an organisation that works to improve the lives of women and their families in Maharashtra, the second most populous state in India. As the name suggests, the project aims to encourage young girls to stay at school and further their education by providing them with access to affordable and sustainable transportation – in the form of bicycles. In turn, the eventual goal is to help empower rural women, and help provide freedom from repression and poverty. The scheme itself was inspired by one Asma Tamboli, a student who applied to the Mann Deshi Mahila Bank for a summer job, with the aim of funding the purchase of a bike to help her attend high school.
