Cairo is a city rife with congestion. According to a 2012 World Bank study, the situation is “beyond an annoyance.” In this growing metropolis of over 9 million people, gridlock has become a major economic and environmental problem. Aiming be a part of the solution to this situation, the Cairo Bike Scene is a group of riders working to promote cycling as a sustainable, healthy and clean mode of transport. The group cites a number of reasons that city dwellers should take to two wheels, including the strengthening of family bonds, closer-knit communities and as a recreation outlet for Cairo’s youth.
